5 Types Of Hair Extensions

If you’re new to hair extensions, you may be confused by some of the different terms. What are clip-ins? And what’s a halo extension? The truth is that there are lots of different types of hair extension. Each type has its pros and cons, so it’s worth doing your research. Below is a guide to the five main types of hair extensions.

Clip-ins are the most popular type of hair extension. As the name suggests, they clip onto your hair. They’re one of the easiest types of extensions to take on and off and tend to make a great temporary solution. Because of how easy they are to remove, you can also spend time experimenting with them to get the right look. Damage to hair can occur if you’re wearing clip-ins daily, however they’re one of the least damaging types of hair extensions overall.

Tape-in extensions work a bit like, well, tape. They come with adhesive pads that are heated up and then glued either side of your hair. Unlike clip-ins, you can’t really install tape-in extensions yourself – in most cases, you’ll have to pay a hair stylist to put them in for you. The process takes about 40 minutes to an hour and the extensions stay in for 4 to 8 weeks. Tape-in extensions are more damaging to your hair than clip-ins due to use of heated glue, but are better suited for daily use.

Weave hair extensions are delicately woven into the hair. This is definitely something you’ll want to see a professional stylist for as it can be very fiddly work. The process can take several hours. The benefit of these extensions is that they’re by far the most natural and seamless looking – there’s no clips or tape to conceal. Weave hair extensions usually stay in your hair for 6 – 8 weeks before having to be reapplied. These extensions can put quite a lot of strain on the roots and scalp and are as tricky to remove as they are to put in.

Halo extensions are growing in popularity. Extensions are attached to a thin ‘halo’-like wire which sits beneath the hair. They are the most comfortable form of extensions and do the least amount of damage to your hair (even less so than clip-ins). Like clip-ins extensions, you can also easily put extensions on yourself. When it comes to bluntly-cut hairstyles, you may want to stick to clip-ins which are easier to conceal, however for most other hairstyles halo extensions can be a good DIY alternative.

Pre-bonded extensions are fused to natural hair using various adhesives. These extensions are put in by a hair stylist over a period of several hours. Due to the use of chemicals, this is by the far the most damaging form of hair extensions – some hair stylists may refuse to carry out this application in order to protect your natural hair. The big reason as to why people opt for pre-bonded hair extensions is due to how long they last (in some cases up to 4 months).
